You all should watch the film ‘Late Marriage’ about Georgian Jews

I love that movie and you should go watch it but it’s also so bizarre

somepalestiniankid:

I was looking at the vintageisrael blog and there are so many pictures of militiamen/idf soldiers in the early days of the state, and i realise they’re all using soviet weapons (if i’m right) but that’s sort of weird?

Well in the early days the IDF/various militias used whatever weapons they could… there was also a weird short time period around 1948 where the Soviet Union supported Israel. There were also weapon deals from Czechoslovakia to the Haganah but most of those were rifles from Nazi Germany (which I personally find weirder).

In 1965 the party split into two factions, one Zionist and the other anti-Zionist. The Zionist faction retained the name Maki, while the anti-Zionist faction named itself Rakah. The Soviet Union recognized Rakah as the official communist party in Palestine quickly after its formation. Rakah still exists today, and ironically, it has renamed itself Maki, while the original (Zionist) Maki has been disbanded.
